Arup Goes the Extra Mile

Arup Amsterdam Runners 2008

Wear Red for RedR 2008 was an enormous success! Our supporters across the globe took part in a variety of events to help raise funds for us.

We talked to Arup’s Michael Davis who, with his colleagues in Amsterdam, organised a range of activities to support our work:

Why did you (and your company) choose to raise money for RedR?
Arup is closely involved with RedR’s work, as a patron of the organisation, so when I heard about Wear Red for RedR through Arup’s intranet I got together with other members of staff to take part.

Who took part?
I’m part of a group in the Amsterdam office who got together to brainstorm ideas for this year’s Wear Red event. Most of the office took part and got into the spirit of things by wearing red and donating money.

What did you do to raise funds?
We planned three activities around the event: a question and answer session on RedR and disaster relief, a sponsored 14k run, and a staff collection on the day for people who wore red.

I was one of the five people who took part in the run on Sunday 17 February, which took us on a tour of some of Arup’s recent developments in Amsterdam. The staff were asked to pledge money depending on how many kilometres they thought the team could manage to run!

The run was a particularly successful initiative. As it turned out, the course spanned a total of 15km. The office dug deep into its social fund in order to get t-shirts printed off for the runners, which they proudly sported on the day (attracting the attention of more than a few passers by).

How much money do you hope to raise?
I am still collating the money we have raised, but it looks set to be 500-700 euros.

What would you say to other people or companies interested in supporting RedR’s work?
It’s important to talk to people who’ve done work with RedR in order to fully understand the work the organisation does.  As well as providing services such as training and a register of engineers for overseas placements, the organisation also provides a vital support network for members.

RedR would like to thank Michael, the rest of the Arup Amsterdam team and everyone else who helped to raise money for RedR!
