RedR International joins Sphere board

RedR International and, by extension, RedR UK has joined the board of Sphere, the leading initiative to define and uphold the standards by which the global community responds to the plight of people affected by disasters.

Since its creation in 1997, the Sphere Project – which produces the annual ‘Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response’ handbook – has become an essential part of global aid delivery, helping to ensure quality and accountability in relief operations worldwide.

RedR International – which also includes national accredited RedR organisations in Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka – will be represented on the Sphere Project board by RedR UK’s Chief Executive, Martin McCann.

Martin McCann said: “RedR International is very pleased to join the board of the Sphere Project. Over the past decade, Sphere has become one of the most effective drivers of positive change in global humanitarian response.

“RedR’s vision of a world in which sufficient competent and committed personnel are available and responding to humanitarian needs goes hand in hand with Sphere's work to ensure that all possible steps are taken to alleviate human suffering arising out of disaster and conflict.”

Sphere Project manager John Damerell said: “RedR has trained and deployed professional, experienced aid workers to every major disaster since 1980 and ensured appropriate knowledge of and adherence to Sphere standards since 1997. RedR’s capacity and experience in disaster response, considerable outreach and training expertise will benefit the Sphere Project as a whole.”
RedR International becomes the 18th member of the Sphere Project board, joining the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Plan International, Save the Children and World Vision, alongside many others.
