RedR is collaborating with Engineers Without Borders UK (EWB- UK) and Emergency Aid Training (EAT) to run a series of practical weekends that give potential humanitarians hands-on experience of setting up emergency engineering equipment.

This weekend in Netherton, Wakefield and will focus on emergency WASH engineering - Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in a humanitarian setting. It will include both talks and practical sessions on:

  • Basic surveying
  • Water quality testing and treatment
  • Water supply design and construction

The weekend is not a fully-fledged training course on emergency WASH but rather aims to give participants a good flavour of what the issues and practical considerations are in the humanitarian sector.

It is aimed at engineers wanting to get into humanitarian work and achieve a better understanding of emergency engineering. Participants are expected to have a good appreciation of the principles and practice of water engineering.

It is not assumed that anyone has worked in humanitarian emergencies before, although people with relief experience are welcome to contribute their experiences.

Based just outside Wakefield, EAT's venue has equipment to set up and run emergency water and sanitation facilities, shelter, construction and other practical emergency operations. Accommodation is basic and either camping or in a church hall, depending on the weather. All meals are provided.
