Roger Dean, a Logistics and Liaison Officer with GOAL attended the Management of Staff Safety training course offered by our Sudan Office in Khartoum. We caught up with him a few months later to find out how he was able to use and apply the lessons he’d learned. "I was a journalist, and worked for the BBC World Service as a correspondent in Tanzania in Africa. I was getting weary of the professional detachment that journalists must keep in order to make their articles as objective as possible. I was always able to distance myself from my surroundings to give a balanced perspective but I always admired professionals who got involved and did what they thought was best. So it seemed like a good move. “I was freelancing in Ethiopia when I met the country Director for GOAL at the time, I told her I was looking for a new challenge and she suggested that I join GOAL. I am enjoying the feeling of being effective - it’s a great buzz. Seeing things happen in what can be a very difficult environment is very satisfying, I enjoy that role.” “I did the security course as I was going to be responsible for the security and management of over 80 staff. Security was one of the core parts of the job and I could not have done it without some form of training, it had to be with RedR. I got a lot of useful things out of it. The other participants in the workshop were a very interesting group of people, everyone was able to contribute and bounce things off each other. The content was good too, and I learned a lot of interesting stuff from the tutors, it was very valuable.”
