We've been providing expert training in safety, security and risk management for aid workers and humanitarian organisations in Sudan since 2005. Why? Because the risks aid workers face in their day-to-day operations delivering life-saving services to communities – particularly in the region of Darfur – have increased dramatically in recent years.
After a protracted civil war and ongoing conflict, the people of Sudan continue to face considerable challenges. The UN has described the situation in Darfur, in Western Sudan, as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Today, many of the people living in camps for the internally displaced are malnourished. Access to health services is generally poor. Life expectancy is low.
Humanitarian organisations and their staff are working to save and improve lives in Sudan. But often, security incidents can prevent the delivery of essential aid and support altogether. Nearly a quarter of the 5 million people affected by the Darfur emergency do not receive the help they need because it is simply too dangerous for aid workers to reach them.
Our main Sudan office is based in Khartoumn.
RedR is the only organisation providing staff safety and welfare training for humanitarian workers in Sudan in both English and Arabic. With training centres in Khartoum, El Fasher, El Geneina and Nyala, we ensure aid workers across the region can access the knowledge, skills and support they need to protect themselves and continue to operate in a hostile or dangerous situation. It means aid workers stay safe – and aid reaches those who need it.
But that’s not all. We know that effective aid delivery also requires highly trained humanitarian staff with expert technical, project and people management skills. That’s why RedR also offers a range of courses to meet these needs, too. We also deliver bespoke training to aid agencies that require tailor-made support or training in deep field locations.
Over the past year, we have trained 2,128 aid workers across Sudan. We've run 125 courses in four locations, focussing our efforts on training national aid workers. This ensures vital humanitarian skills remain in-country where they are needed most.
