Prepare to Respond II

Developing Humanitarian Capacity in EU Member States and Candidate Countries

Prepare to Respond II was a programme of affordable training courses, free placements, study visits and tailor-made consultancy services offered to aid workers and humanitarian Civil Society Organisations in the new EU Member States and Candidate Countries. The ECHO-funded project aimed to enhance and increase the preparedness and response capacities of humanitarians in these countries.

Following the success of Prepare to Respond in 2011/12, the project was implemented again by RedR in collaboration with the Austrian Red Cross. The second phase started in May 2013 and ran for 22 months, offering 11 trainings, 4 work placements in the field, 14 study visit exchange in London and Vienna, and 6 Consultancy services. Thanks to the programme, 271 aid workers employed by Humanitarian organisations based in the target countries, and over 50 organisations have benefitted from high quality capacity building services and improved their response capacities to disasters and emergencies along with strengthened their knowledge on personal security in the field.

The great success of the programme, was not only proved through the measurement of the direct impact of the services offered, with the use of an ad-hoc questionnaire and pre and post training test, yet also with the use of an anonymous evaluation form submitted by each participant at the end of each event, that registered an overall high (over 90%) satisfactory rate.

Placements and Study Visits exchange have seen the collaboration and involvement of highly ranked international Humanitarian organisations, such as Save the Children, Merlin, Plan International, Mango, British Red Cross, CAFOD, ActionAid and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in London. The four participants involved in the work Placements, had also the opportunity to increase their knowledge thanks to a field experience within the project they were working on. The countries involved were Georgia, Ethiopia, South Africa, Philippines, and Kosovo.
