About the course:
This workshop will provide an overview of the water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH) sector, identifying the key issues to address in an emergency. The course guides participants through the key stages undertaken in planning a WASH response during an emergency. Participants are then able to apply their knowledge through creating a response to a case study.
WASH Essentials is one of four courses that are being run as part of RedR’s WASH Week. Other courses include Introduction to Sanitation for Emergencies, Introduction to Water Supply in Emergencies and Introduction to Hygiene Promotion in Emergencies.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Explain terminologies associated with the WASH sector
- Describe how disease is transmitted through water and relevant barriers to this transmission
- Identify the different stakeholders in the WASH sector and explain why coordination with stakeholders and other sectors is important for successful WASH programmes
- Analyse assessment data to identify key WASH needs
- Discuss effective decision making at different stages of an emergency
- Name some of the international standards and indicators that affect WASH programmes

Discuss the challenges of interventions in different environments, climates, and cultures and identify possible solutions
Who should attend?
This is an introductory course aimed at those approaching WASH for the first time. It is suitable for participants who have not previously worked within the humanitarian sector and for those working within the sector who would like to gain an introductory insight into WASH programming.
WASH Essentials would be suitable to a range of professionals looking for a broad introduction to the sector. The course would be beneficial for: policy level staff who would like to better understand how WASH programmes work at field level; employees of a trust, foundation, or other grant-making body with responsibility for evaluating funding applications who want to understand the background steps to producing a WASH application; or field specialists who work in a specialised role with emergency WASH but want to understand the bigger picture of the sector.
Course structure:
Registration will take place from 9 am. Training will begin at 09.30 am and conclude at 5 pm. The day is broken up into four sessions, separated by an hour lunch break and 15 minute tea/coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon.
The day begins with an exploration of how diseases are transmitted through water in emergencies and how WASH programmes are used to create barriers to break transmission chains.
In the second session, the course covers the ways that WASH as a sector overlaps with areas of humanitarian response and the coordination mechanisms that exist to prevent overlap and duplication.
WASH needs assessments and the ways they lead to programme planning will be examined before lunch.
During the remainder of the day, the group will analyse several case studies, evaluating contextual challenges, levels and types of WASH needs, and interagency and inter-sector coordination to produce broad level response ideas, forming the basis of an emergency response proposal. The day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions.
