Suitable for:

Those who spend the majority of their time travelling between field bases or working outside the office and rely on efficient communications. The training is equally aimed at staff that is in the office and in charge of coordinating communications between base and field and ensuring equipment is functioning properly. It is an introductory foundational level course.

Course covers:

This 1 day course aims to have participants display and understand the minimum standard of skills in correct usage of communications equipment to enhance the overall and broader aspect of humanitarian operations

Course outcomes:

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between the three main types of communication equipment available to field missions
  • Explain the principles of a channel/frequency structure
  • Explain the basic voice procedure and demonstrate usage of the phonetic alphabet
  • Explain the need for call signs and location codes
  • Demonstrate a conversation using correct voice procedure
  • Describe how to perform a radio check
  • Demonstrate usage of the VHF Handset, satellite telephone and obtaining a GPS reading
  • List what information is needed to give an accurate emergency incident report
  • Demonstrate giving emergency incident reports over the radio
  • Demonstrate receiving an incident report and consider if there is enough information for a response
  • Demonstrate writing a post incident report
  • State what a communications briefing should contain for a new staff member
