Course covers:

This course aims to introduce the underlying principles of the humanitarian sector and the realities of working in emergencies.

 

The course will examine the humanitarian and relief systems, accountability and international law, needs assessment, mainstreaming gender, culture and security and the impacts and dilemmas of relief work.

 

Participants engage in a combination of individual and group activities, culminating in an exercise focusing on planning and managing a relief response.

 

Registration will take place on Sunday evening between 18.00 hrs and 22.00 hrs, with a buffet supper on arrival. The course will end by 15.00 hrs on the Friday.

Course outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of natural disasters and complex emergencies.
  • Describe the roles and relationships of organisations in the international relief system.
  • Explain the relevance of international legal instruments to humanitarian workers.
  • Apply techniques and approaches that increase individual responsibility in humanitarian work.
  • Recognise their own knowledge and skills and identify further development needs.

 

Cost:
Please see below for details of the course fees. The fees are inclusive of accommodation, food and training from the evening of registration to the last afternoon of training. Participants will be responsible for arranging their own travel to and from the venue.
