Suitable for:
A particular focus on those who spend the majority of their time either travelling between field bases or working outside the office and therefore rely on efficient communications. Equally the training is aimed at those staff who are in the office in charge of coordinating good communications between base and field and ensuring equipment is functioning properly.
Course covers:
- Differentiate between the three main types of communication equipment available to field missions
- Explain the principles of a channel / frequency structure
- Explain the basic voice procedure
- Demonstrate usage of the phonetic alphabet
- Describe the importance of secure communication
- Explain the need for callsigns and location codes
- Demonstrate a conversation using correct voice procedure
- Describe how to perform a radio check
- Demonstrate receiving a call on the VHF Handset
- Demonstrate making a call on a satellite telephone
- Demonstrate how to obtain a valid GPS reading
- List what information is needed to give an accurate emergency incident report
- Demonstrate giving emergency incident reports over the radio
- Demonstrate receiving an incident report and consider if there is enough information for a response
- Describe importance and required information for a written post incident report
- Demonstrate writing a post incident report
- State what a communications briefing should contain for a new staff member
- Have any queries clarified by instructors
- Write an action plan for change
Course outcomes:
This 1 day course aims to have participants display and understand the minimum standard of skills in correct usage of communications equipment to enhance the overall and broader aspect of humanitarian operations
