In an emergency, effective planning and management of projects and people is one of the most important requirements. Aid workers need a thorough understanding of the principles underpinning planning and management so that they can implement them and respond effectively to the situation on the ground.
Aid organisations and their staff are managing expensive projects in multi-cultural, context-specific situations that come with a host of their own issues. Relief workers must know how to plan, manage and lead teams in this environment, in often difficult and stressful situations.
As well as placing Members in management positions for a number of aid agencies, RedR runs courses in the UK and in Sri Lanka which develop in participants the core competencies needed to effectively plan and manage aid projects. These include leading others, building and managing teams, effective communication, planning and strategic thinking, problem solving, risk management and resource management.
These courses introduce several important tools and models for management such as logical planning frameworks and related planning tools, monitoring and evaluation procedures, reporting templates, coaching models and other mechanisms for performance management. By offering the right balance of theory and practice, they offer something for all level of managers.
We also deliver bespoke training to aid agencies and other organisations, to provide skills and knowledge in the planning and management of relief programmes.
In 2008, RedR trained over 600 people in Sri Lanka and the UK in all aspects of planning and managing relief programmes. We also provided tailored training to several aid agencies including the Swiss Red Cross and UNICEF. In the UK, our Managing People in Emergencies and Managing Projects in Emergencies courses have been credit-rated by Oxford Brookes University.
“The workshop has given me much food for thought and will improve my communication skills and make me better distant manager overall.”
