In order to create sustainable solutions and deal effectively with disasters, it is important for aid workers to be able to pass their skills and knowledge onto others, particularly local relief workers in areas where disasters occur. Training and facilitation courses help aid workers to build confidence and update skills. They allow people to share information about best practice in the field and provide excellent networking opportunities.
Having the most up-to-date knowledge and being able to communicate effectively and share knowledge with others enables aid workers to run more effective relief programmes and enables local communities be better prepared for the future.
RedR offers several training and facilitation courses for aid workers both in the UK and in our in-country offices. The courses teach participants how to train others and facilitate learning. Our approach is very practical and participants are given the opportunity to apply the theory they have learnt immediately. Many of our participants stay in touch with each other after the course is over and continue to benefit from having met others working in a similar field.
Last year, RedR provided almost 200 relief workers with skills in Training and Facilitation, enabling them to pass their knowledge to others and run effective workshops.
“High level of participation and an approach that was very empowering for the group participants. This training was fantastic---really useful, logical and well delivered.”

RedR member, Jake Zarins, has provided training to communities when on projects in Sri Lanka and Liberia. In Liberia he managed a reconstruction project and trained community members on how to maintain the buildings and in other relevant areas such as health promotion and community management processes. This enabled the community to maintain the structures after Jake had left, ensuring a sustainable solution.
