Safety and security

Given the insecure and often rapidly changing environments in which aid agencies work in today, safety and security management is paramount. It needs to be at the heart of humanitarian programmes. Aid workers are now more at risk than ever before. According to the Overseas Development Institute, in 2008, 260 humanitarian aid workers were killed, kidnapped or seriously injured in violent attacks.

Safety and security knowledge can help us reach people in need in areas that have previously been inaccessible. It can help keep relief and development programmes running that would otherwise have closed, meaning more people receive the aid they need.

At the very least, this training empowers aid workers to understand how to keep themselves safer and to know what to do in an emergency or conflict situation. Safety and security training focuses on how we can work within communities in secure ways and how we can interpret conflict and security practices for the benefit of all.

Safety and security training worldwide for humanitarian programmes

RedR delivers safety and security training globally. RedR has more than 10 years experience conducting safety and security training both in the field and at head office level in over 18 countries. The safety and security programme is designed to meet the needs of all national and international staff of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other humanitarian organisations both in the UK and overseas. Our programme uses a team of skilled trainers and partner organisations.

As well as safety and security courses being a significant part of our training programmes in the UK and in Sudan, we also have significant experience and expertise in delivering bespoke safety and security courses to organisations like Oxfam GB, Tearfund and ADRA.

Sharing expertise in the humanitarian sector

As well as delivering training, we run an annual Security Forum in the UK and are part of a wider global network of international security professionals. We have also developed learning aids and core security competencies for the sector. Our vast range of experience of working in insecure environments helps us facilitate the sharing, discussion and exchange of knowledge that is so important in reducing the risks facing aid workers.

Safety & Security Review

The Safety & Security Review is an on-line publication produced by RedR, which provides a forum for sharing knowledge and expertise around the topic of safety and security in the global aid sector. It is written by a variety of experts in this field.

"The RedR course has strongly reinforced our security plan...I now have a better understanding of security management....I shared the course content with some of my colleagues and straight away we made a lot of changes within our organisation, our stress management policy was modified for example"
