The unprecedented rainfall coupled with ensuing floods and landslides claimed more than 450 lives and affected 5.4 million people, one-sixth of the state’s population.
RedR staff were on the ground helping to deliver safe, clean drinking water and life-saving training to affected communities. Paul George from RedR India describes the impact of the floods:
"I am from Kerala, but I’ve never seen this scale of flooding before. Some people had lost everything they owned – a lifetime of savings and earnings. They’d never been displaced before, they never expected something like this to happen. They said to me, ‘When we are in the camps, the government is providing food. But what happens after we go back? How do we start living?’"
