Post: Permanent, Full time 

Salary: Up to £65,000

RedR UK is an international NGO and learning provider that develops capacity and supports aid workers, organisations, and communities to prepare for and respond effectively to crises within humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding contexts. Our work builds resilience, primarily in low and lower middle-income countries worldwide. We have 40 years’ experience responding to disasters.      

We are an HPass Certified Learning Provider, meaning we meet the Humanitarian Learning Standards. RedR UK is committed to the Humanitarian Charter, the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Relief and the Core Humanitarian Standard. 

RedR UK has offices in London and Amman and maintains a large pool of highly qualified trainers and experts who go through a rigorous certification and selection process. Our work is overseen and supported by a Board of Trustees with wide experience, in the humanitarian sector and other fields. RedR is a Membership organisation with a global network of 1,800 Members, all of whom are experienced humanitarian professionals.

About this role 

The Associate Director of Programmes & Development will oversee our business development and project delivery for our donors. You will enable the growth of RedR; develop our people, systems and processes; and ensuring the delivery of impactful and meaningful programmes that benefit the most vulnerable.  

The Associate Director of Programmes & Busiess Development will be pivotal in delivering organisational strategy and will develop and deliver operational plans. You will lead a team of committed professionals working on projects that offer engineering in emergencies, climate resilience and adaptation, and humanitarian services. The Associate Director of Programmes will ensure that RedR’s values of Collaboration, Excellence, Lifelong Learning, Integrity and Accountability are woven into everything that RedR does. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Business Development and Programme Delivery:

  • Direct, scope and position for opportunities across our pipeline in line with our thematic, client and geographic priorities
  • Continually improve our business development and project delivery standardised tools and processes for bid management, project delivery, and reporting
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to oversee technical design, recruitment, partnerships, commercials, and compliance in line with best practice. 
  • Develop and deliver RedR UK’s unique value proposition across our programming
  • Deepen existing relationships with donors, agencies, and stakeholders to enhance programme sustainability 
  • Identify and pursue new partnerships and funding opportunities to expand the programme portfolio
  • Engage with key stakeholders to understand their needs and align programme offerings accordingly
  • Implement strategies to enhance RedR UK's reputation and visibility in the humanitarian and development sector, attracting new partners and donors

RedR UK leadership: 

  • Responsible for development and approval of programme strategies, budgets and annual operational plans
  • Lead on change management & strategic initiatives for RedR 
  • Monitor projects to ensure all targets for income generation are met, a surplus is delivered, and reserves grow
  • Manage a process of regular and effective communication and reporting across RedR, where lessons are learned, analysed and applied
  • Represent RedR in external meetings, expert convenings, and with partner networks
  • Work with other RedR organisations to develop the RedR family as a global brand, investigating synergies and economies of scale between the organisations
  • Foster a positive and resilient team culture that embraces and adapts to change, promoting innovation and continuous improvement 
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team in setting a clear vision and strategy for the Programmes Department
  • Present data-driven insights in SLT meeting meetings to support informed decision-making

Staff Management:

  • Manage collaborative and high performing project teams who work on both business development and project delivery across engineering in emergencies, climate resilience, and humanitarian services 
  • Enshrine best practice HR processes including in recruitment, onboarding, professional development and performance management
  • Ensure that team members have clear links to strategic objectives, operational plans and targets and have a clear sense of their place within RedR 
  • Monitor overall security management of RedR projects to ensure safety of RedR teams
  • Foster collaboration across teams for effectiveness and efficiency, to avoid duplication, achieve a consistent approach and to improve quality  

Quality, learning and impact:

  • Oversee RedR’s global provision of a high and consistent standard of delivery (training, learning, technical support, membership and consultancy) 
  • Oversee RedR’s work to capture, demonstrate and communicate its impact and value for money internally and externally through regular M&E reports and collaboration on similar initiatives within the sector
  • Keep up to date with current issues, challenges and developments in the humanitarian, engineering in emergencies, and climate resilience and adaptation sectors to ensure RedR UK has a clear understanding of sector capacity building needs 

Financial Management: 

  • Maintain a comprehensive and up to date oversight of the financial position of all operations within the Programmes Department 
  • In collaboration with the CEO, compile the annual Programmes Department budget and targets in line with strategic objectives
  • Ensure effective budget monitoring, review and adjustment procedures are in place 
  • Ensure full compliance with financial reporting requirements
  • Foster a culture of cost consciousness and efficiency to optimise project budgets and resources
