  • Earthquake response: Safe Demolition Guide

In the early phases of an emergency there is often an urgent need for technical advice. RedR training participant Sean Smeltzer has written a guide to safe demolition of seismically damaged buildings.

The two earthquakes that struck Nepal in April and May 2015 left around 9000 people dead and millions without services or shelter. Four London-based consulting civil engineers from engineering, design and consultancy company Ramboll volunteered to help the emergency response in Nepal and attended a 1-day RedR training courses before flying out for a 10-day assignment.

While working in Nepal, engineer Sean Smeltzer identified a need for a set of guidelines for the safe demolition of buildings affected by the earthquake. On his return to the UK he developed the Safe Demolition Guide, available for download here.
