Almost half a million people have lost their lives. Half of the country’s pre-war population has been uprooted. Those who have stayed, deprived of essential goods and services, face unimaginable hardship.
As the crisis has become protracted, donor fatigue has set in, and funding for humanitarian programming is likely to shrink in the coming months. The United Nations and international NGOs are now turning to local NGOs and community-based organisations to ensure the continued provision of vital assistance once the international presence recedes - and it’s more important than ever to build local humanitarian capacity.
