The Humanitarian sector recognises that for too long there has been a gap in including gender, age and disability considerations in an emergency response. Gender, age and disability are all key factors that influence access to services, programmes and protection in an emergency. This means that aid workers’ efforts to help lead and strengthen recovery often fail to reach the most vulnerable.
As both organisations and donors look towards inclusive programming there is a drive for organisational and institutional change; increasing knowledge about the challenges, increasing confidence to overcome them and encouraging action to deliver inclusive programming. In recognition of the current gap in response, RedR has been part of a consortium of seven leading humanitarian and research organisations, led by HelpAge International, one activity is the development of a set of Minimum Standards for Age and Disability Inclusion in Humanitarian Action, recently released by the Age and Disability Capacity (ADCAP) programme.
This three-day course will provide the knowledge and tools to help mainstream gender, age and disability into all interventions so that organisations move beyond simply the desire to be inclusive and into the reality of meeting minimum standards of inclusion. This should result in building better programmes which reduce risks faced by vulnerable groups and respond to those most in need.
What does the course cover?
• Barriers faced by vulnerable groups of people (eg. the elderly, people with disabilities) accessing humanitarian aid
• Assessment of risks and capacities of older people, people with disabilities and different genders
• Twin track approach to programming and using the minimum standards of inclusion to shape the design and implementation of projects in emergencies
• Mainstreaming gender, age and disability in activities through organisational change
By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Recognise prejudice and cultural, attitudinal and environmental barriers that different genders, persons with disability and older people experience
• Explain the roles that attitudes towards gender, disability and age play in discrimination and how these attitudes can be influenced
• Identify key areas where priorities for different genders, persons with disability and older people can be integrated into humanitarian response
• Analyse how violence manifests in emergency situations against different genders, age and disability in urban and rural settings
• Create programmatic changes to overcome barriers of inclusion and reduce the risk of violence in urban and rural settings
• Mainstream gender, age and disability in organisations through advocacy and influence
Registration will take place from 8.30 am on the first day. Each day, the course will run from 9 am and conclude at 5.30 pm. Each day is separated by a lunch break and coffee/ tea breaks in the morning and afternoon.
Participants will be actively encouraged to participate in classroom discussions and group work. The trainers will draw on both theoretical and practical knowledge in order to make the experience and learning applicable to the realities of project management in the humanitarian sector.
From the second day, training begins with a review of the topics covered the previous day to ensure that the concepts, tools, and frameworks are fully understood. Every day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions. Each day then builds and expands from the previous day with day three cumulating in groups designing and advising how to build an inclusive project.
Terminology, Attitudes, Introduction to Minimum Standards for Age and Disability Inclusion in Humanitarian Action, Awareness of Gender sensitivity.
After registration and a welcome in the morning, there will be an overview of the terminology and barriers to inclusion. This will lead into looking at how attitudes play a divisive role in accessing aid and how these can be shaped to create an approach that is inclusive for all. We will also look at risks and capacities of vulnerable groups of people before introducing the Minimum Standards for Age and Disability Inclusion in Humanitarian Action, and awareness of Gender sensitivity, when groups will begin working with case studies to analyse areas where programmes can prioritise actions to ensure inclusion.
Risks and Capacities of vulnerable groups and violence against vulnerable persons.
The morning will cover identifying risks and capacities of vulnerable groups followed by analysing how various forms of violence manifests in emergency situations against different genders, age and disability in urban and rural settings. The afternoon sessions will look at key priorities for change within programming to help ensure that the rights of the most vulnerable individuals are respected, and reduce cases of violence using the twin track approach.
Gender, Age and Disability Mainstreaming.
The final day will focus on mainstreaming inclusion throughout the lifecycle of a project and how to advocate and influence change in organisations and individuals. The last session is reserved for wrapping up the course: a group debrief, recapping key points, answering any lingering questions, individual reflection, action planning, and receiving your certificates of completion.

What's the refund policy?
-For bookings cancelled two or more weeks before a course, administrative charges will apply. Applicants will be entitled to a refund of 85% of the course fees paid, or if places are available will be offered a transfer of 90% of the course fees paid onto the next instance of the course.
-For bookings cancelled one to ten working days* before a course begins, 25% of the course fee will be refunded (*during normal UK working days, Monday-Friday and working hours 9am-5pm).
-For bookings cancelled less than 24 hours (working days only) before a course, or after a course has started, no refund will provided.
-If the applicant chooses to transfer to another course and then cancels their booking a second time, neither a further transfer nor a refund will be offered.
-The refund must be claimed within two months from the cancelled course start date.
-Please note that unfortunately we are only able to cover our local bank charges and not the recipient’s bank charges when we make refunds.
