Pakistan programme

RedR has set up a new training programme in Islamabad in Pakistan. This follows a previous programme in Pakistan set up in response to the 2005 earthquake, which ran until June 2006.

There has been a large humanitarian presence in the North-West Frontier Province (NFWP) of Pakistan and neighbouring areas, ever since the earthquake in 2005, which left 80,000 dead and affected over 8 million people. Recovery from the earthquake has been protracted, in part due to a further earthquake in 2008 and widespread flooding in August 2009.

Security in Pakistan is fragile, with a spate of recent bombings and direct attacks on the humanitarian community. It is predicted that in 2010, tens of thousands more Pakistanis will be forced to flee their homes, as internal conflict between the Pakistani military and the Taliban’s influence and support in the NFWP continues.

There is an urgent need for training to develop local skills and capacity to respond to this current crisis and future disasters.

RedR’s Programme in Pakistan

In March 2010, RedR set up a new programme in Islamabad in Pakistan to provide vital support to the humanitarian community across the country. We are currently delivering training in security management, coordination of humanitarian activities (cluster coordination) and humanitarian practice and principles.

Over the next 12 months, we aim to run over 50 training courses and workshops, training approximately 860 aid workers.

Security management training

RedR’s Certificate in Security Management, a course credit-rated by Oxford Brookes University, develops management level skills in security. We also deliver Guard Training and training in Travel Safety, Dealing with Kidnap and Abduction, and First Aid in Pakistan.

Humanitarian training (Cluster training)

To improve the effectiveness of coordination of humanitarian activity, RedR is working with the cluster system of coordination, providing workshops for lead humanitarian staff working in the across the country.

Humanitarian practice and principles

Training in Essentials of Humanitarian Practice and Do No Harm, is targeted at local, skilled technical staff that would benefit from gaining extra awareness of humanitarian principles.

“I think it is an excellent idea that RedR re-establish an office in Pakistan...I think that their contribution through training will be invaluable to the current/future humanitarian crisis’ and to the broader humanitarian community.”
