Ian Smout

Area of expertise: Chartered Civil Engineer

Background: Ian has more than 40 years' experience in education, training, research and consultancy relating to water engineering and management in developing countries. His experience includes long-term assignments with engineering company Mott MacDonald in countries such as Somalia, Nepal, Indonesia and Bhutan.

Ian retired from the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) at Loughborough University in 2018, having worked there since 1987, including six years as Director. He has been a Member of RedR UK since the 1980s and an elected Trustee since 2008. He was Chair from 2010 to 2015 and he is currently UK representative to RedR International and its Treasurer.

Areas of interest: Ian’s special interest lies in strengthening the delivery of services to people in need, through identifying and disseminating best practice, training and supporting fieldworkers, and effective management.
