Online Facilitated Training modules in English and Arabic

This free online training is essential knowledge for anyone who wants to support communities affected by disasters more effectively, building resilience for the long term.

Modules are free to attend, and offered on a first-come-first-serve basis. Click on the individual links on each date to register for the module you’d like to attend. They are all facilitated online on Zoom, and delivered in either Arabic or English. All time zones are GMT/UTC.

1. Staying Effective (safety, security and wellbeing) (3 hours)

Learn the basics in staying effective when working in humanitarian crisis. Gain a foundation for personal security, including assessing your own behaviour and risk profile, developing situational awareness, and conducting rapid, dynamic risk assessments. Also learn techniques to manage stress and remain effective during crisis.

2. Repair and seismic retrofitting techniques of vernacular houses (3 days, 2.5 hours per session per day)

This module explores the different retrofitting measures that can be used for earthquake-affected vernacular buildings and helps provide an understanding of how coordination and collaboration with a range of stakeholders (eg international actors, government entities, public service providers, etc) can help to deliver effective engineering solutions.

3. Training of Trainers (ToT) Preparation course

This introductory Training of Trainers course aims to strengthen the capacity of local responders, partners and others, so they can contribute to the success of their projects and transfer learnings to their teams, facilitated online sessions, you will learn tips and techniques that will help you to:

This course will comprise individual and small group work assigned between each session. The facilitator will be available to provide support to students.

What does the course cover?

  • By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
  • Write SMART, learner-centred training objectives
  • Prioritise content and establish key messages
  • Present information simply and effectively
  • Design practical activities and create session plans
  • Facilitate groupwork and encourage active participation

Course Structure

The programme will be run over five days between the 3rd March - 7th of March 2024, allowing time for collaborative working and self-study.

The training composed of five live sessions, with individual and small group work assigned between each session. The facilitator will be available to provide support to trainees in between sessions via email.

4. Water Satety Planning (English)

Module aim:
To support participants knowledge and skills necessary to conduct water safety planning in flood-affected communities
Module Objectives:
Understand how to conduct a risk assessment in Water Safety Planning
Identify the correct techniques to undertake monitoring, surveillance and sampling
Learn how to undertake emergency planning in Water Safety Planning
Acknowledge effective ways to implement Water Safety Plans
Course Structure:
The module comprises of one live facilitated session per cohort. We are offering 6 cohorts on different dates.

Protection Programming

Protection is an important theme that every humanitarian must consider when designing and implementing programming in any sector or context. This session provides an introduction to Protection programming which we will build on throughout the rest of the course.

After completing this module, you should be able to:  

  • Describe the key principles and activities of general protection and the main protection sub-sectors.
  • Define different types of gender-based violence.
  • Identify mitigation measures that can be taken to mitigate GBV in emergency programming.
  • Identify typical protection interventions that may be relevant in a given context.

Coordination Structures

Humanitarian Coordination Structures are many and complex. National Governments have existing structures in place to plan for and respond to crises. International actors must be mindful of these, and work to coordinate well with what is already in place.  In the humanitarian community, how we coordinate depends on the context, but common features of the approaches we have seen are the coming together of organisations into thematic sectors, and coordination between these sectors. 

After completing this module, you should be able to:   

  • Identify different approaches to coordination and typical structures related to humanitarian action.

Technical standards exist to guide the work we do in humanitarian action. In most cases, these have been developed through long consultation processes and expert review, leading to a wealth of professional tools and meaningful minimum standards that we can strive for. 

After completing this module, you should be able to:   

  • Describe the rationale and structure of the Sphere handbook.  
  • Locate specific technical standards, actions, indicators and guidance notes within the Sphere handbook.  
  • Identify alternative sources of technical standards and guidance for humanitarian action.
