  • Urban Humanitarianism: Towards a Collaborative Response

On Monday, 16th October, RedR will bring together key urban practitioners from the humanitarian and private sectors to share experiences, address common challenges, and strengthen their networks.

RedR has been working to facilitate collaboration between the humanitarian and private sectors on the response to urban crises since 2013, through phases one and two of the 'Ready to Respond' programme, funded by Lloyd's Charities Trust, the grant-making charity of the Lloyd's insurance market. As such, we are uniquely placed to bring together urban practitioners from both communities.

With this in mind, RedR is organising a short conference:

Common challenges, shared solutions

This event aims to build on the work done to date, giving key actors from both sectors the opportunity to share experiences, learn from successful initiatives, address common challenges, and strengthen their networks: all with a view to moving closer to establishing best practice in this increasingly important field of humanitarian work.

The discussion will be moderated by respected humanitarian practitioner Wendy Fenton, currently Coordinator of the Humanitarian Practice Network hosted by the Humanitarian Policy Group at the Overseas Development Institute. The event will showcase examples of successful collaboration between the humanitarian and private sectors, including:

  • Tom Newby, Head of Humanitarian at CARE International UK, will draw on CARE’s partnership with BuroHappold in Mozambique;
  • Anne O'Mahony, Director of Concern Worldwide, will share lessons learned from Concern's collaboration with Mott McDonald in Lebanon;
  • A speaker from Arup International Development.

The afternoon will also see the official launch of the Urban Hub, which aims to connect private-sector experts with NGOs in need of emergency technical support in urban disasters; and conclude with time to network over tea and coffee.

Please note that this event is invitation-only. To register your interest, please contact Isaac Snow at isaac.snow@redr.org.uk.
