The Hands on Weekend

The 2018 WASH Hands on Weekend

The sun was shining brightly for RedR UK's Hands on Weekend. The theme for this year's event was 'WASH in disaster relief'. Partipants came along to take part in practical, hands-on workshops, learn technical WASH skills and benefit from an introduction into what is needed to work in the humanitarian sector.

Participants and event coordinators from a variety of backgrounds were brought together to a beautiful deer park in Sussex to consider how different WASH elements fit into the overall humanitarian emergency response. With four 1.5 hour practical workshops participants were definitely kept busy!

WASH in action

Between building latrines, tippy taps, sorting through waste from a natural disaster and testing water for people who have been affected by disaster, participants improved their WASH knowledge as well as enjoying the chance to  meet like-minded people with similar aspirations to work in the sector. The day finished with talks delivered by humanitarian professionals around the campfire.

In the relaxing outdoors, getting a break from city life, people chatted and shared stories, learning and wisdom. The RedR UK staff team were especially pleased by how well the homemade chilli, scrambled eggs and vast amount of lemon drizzle cake went down!

Thank you!

The weekends was success was hugely down to our superb team of organisers and helpers. In particular our organisers; Ellis, Carrie, Si-Joe and Diego and without the help of the workshop facilitators; Richard, Michael, Woody and Yasir; and our wonderful volunteers Katherine, Edwin and Katherine!

Thank you!
