Gender-Based Violence in Situations of Armed Conflict (Eng/Romanian)

This module examines how gender based violence (GBV) manifests during a conflict situation.

This module examines how gender based violence (GBV) manifests during a conflict situation. Drawing on data about trends and patterns of GBV related to the Ukraine situation and other conflict scenarios, participants will be able to:

  • Describe key GBV risks faced by the affected population;
  • Examine vulnerabilities that heighten these GBV risks; and
  • Identify key resources and actions they can use to address these risks in line with IASC guidance and inter-agency minimum standards.

This module complements concepts in the Humanitarian Principles, Gender and Inclusion; and Protection components of the RedR UK course for responders to the Ukraine humanitarian crisis.

Module Aim

To better equip people working in humanitarian contexts, including staff and volunteers, to analyse risks and mitigate and respond to GBV, including sexual violence, occurring within populations affected by the Ukraine conflict.

Module Objectives

  • Define GBV and how it manifests in conflict situations,
  • Identify GBV patterns and risks most relevant for the Ukraine conflict, including sexual violence
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of non-GBV specialists to address GBV, including sexual violence
  • Navigate guidance to mitigate and respond to GBV throughout the humanitarian programme cycle
  • Explain how to prepare to apply humanitarian principles and a survivor centred approach to respond to disclosures of GBV.

Course Structure

The module comprises two live facilitated sessions, each 60 minutes duration. There will be a short break between the sessions.

TOTAL learning time: 120 minutes

Participants will be asked to watch a short video prior to the live session.

Who should attend?

The module is designed for humanitarian responders who are working with populations affected by the Ukraine conflict (refugees and IDPs) to increase their understanding and knowledge around gender based violence (GBV), including sexual violence. It responds to the need for humanitarians to know what actions are required to mitigate risks for non-GBV programmes and projects and respond to disclosures. The course is aimed at people working in non-GBV specialist roles.

This course is offered for free; on a first come, first served basis. We will be creating a waiting list, so please email us if the course is already full so we can keep you in mind if anybody drops out.
