As we reach the end of 2020, it is time for us to reflect on what challenges may lie ahead for the humanitarian sector.

The battle against the COVID-19 virus continues, especially for those in the Global South within Internally Displaced People and refugee camps. With 26 million refugees living in camps around the world, including over a million refugees in Jordan we mustn’t lose sight of the ongoing crisis that besets those fleeing to a safer life.

We spoke to Zain Hijjawi, an aid worker in Jordan who benefitted from three RedR UK training courses, about the situation in Jordan today, and here’s what she shared:

“The number of cases have jumped dramatically from 20 to 5,000 cases daily. Now, the situation in Jordan is unstable. Without the appropriate training from RedR UK in relevant humanitarian organisations, COVID-19 could spread rapidly across the Zaatari and Azraq Syrian refugee camps, which [are] home to 140,000 people.”

Now, more than ever, the need to provide training to aid workers who will have to tackle this rise of cases in developing countries is paramount.

Despite the growing need for assistance, financial support for smaller charities and aid organisations is declining as donors report significant cuts to their budgets.

With the help of your donations this year, RedR UK’s COVID-19 response trained over 3,000 humanitarian aid workers and individuals in 91 countries across the globe, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to protect both themselves and vulnerable communities against the devastating effects of the pandemic.

This response included our first ever UK-based programme, training aid workers, organisations and communities to respond to COVID-19 in the UK. In addition, we rolled out 10 courses in the Middle East and North Africa region, with topics including Mental Health Coping Strategies, Hygiene in Different Cultural Contexts, Training Essentials, Busting Myths and Rumours, How to Communicate Risk Effectively, and Remote Management.

NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT

THIS CHRISTMAS, DONATE TO HELP US CONTINUE THIS IMPORTANT WORK AND TRAIN MORE AID WORKERS LIKE ZAIN.

Our work will not end there.

In the aftermath of COVID-19 and the years that follow, we will continue to respond to crises around the globe, supporting those who need it most. Your support will help us achieve this. Please donate so that we can continue this important work.
