Mission Ready: Online Security Training

Mission Ready is an interactive online training platform designed for aid workers in the field.

Mission Ready uses gaming technology to enhance learning through realistic, ‘point-of-view’ (POV) video simulations. Behind the safety of their computer screens, learners are thrust into a series of common security dilemmas that aid workers in the field face. They must make tough security decisions under time-pressure, applying newly-acquired security management knowledge. 

This innovative approach results in an immersive and engaging learning experience, which is essential within the current global security context. 

Security experts from 13 leading NGOs, humanitarian forums and security platforms guided the development of Mission Ready, which was produced by RedR UK and Digital Training Solutions (DTS). Award-winning filmmakers were used to make the learning experience as realistic as possible.

Course Details

The platform currently hosts two courses: 

  1. Field Security Management (FSM), aimed at mainstreaming established security protocols and behaviours into the daily life of all field-based staff. This course has been developed to suit those who are approaching field security for the first time.
  2. Remote Security Management (RSM), aimed at remote security managers and staff whose security is being remotely managed.

What makes Mission Ready so effective?

Mission Ready combines a range of e-learning techniques to fully engage the user. 

  • Short documentaries featuring leading humanitarian security experts
  • Concise and relevant written content
  • Short learning activities linked to the written content
  • Assessed, interactive 'point-of-view' video scenarios. The interactive video scenarios are a chance for the user to test out their new knowledge in a near-to-real-life setting. Users receive feedback at each decision point - and they also have the chance to go back and start again if they wish.

Who should take Mission Ready?

Mission Ready has been designed to meet the security needs of organisations with field staff working in hostile environments who can benefit from flexible online self-study. The course is for all field-based staff, as well as security focal points and managers.

Mission Ready is intended to be accessible to as many people as possible - particularly aid workers in isolated locations, and those who don’t have access to face-to-face security training. With this in mind:

  • Field Security Management is available in English, French, Arabic and Spanish. 
  • Remote Security Management is available in English and Arabic.  
  • The user can choose to play the video simulations between low and high bandwidth options.
  • The platform can now be downloaded as a desktop application. This allows learners to complete the courses offline, mitigating the challenges of intermittent internet connection often faced in the field.

Mission Ready is a stand-alone course. However, it can also complement face-to-face training, such as RedR UK’s 'Personal Security for Humanitarians' and 'Certificate in Security Management'.

The course allowed me to understand how to calculate risk. Sometimes we get complacent when we spend so long in such areas in Somalia. This is dangerous as risk can increase [escalate]. The risk calculation helped me communicate with [HQ] how the situation was in the field.
